A new banned substance may be added to the EU toy safety Directive

On 24 September 2020, the European Commission launched a public consultation on limiting the levels of aniline in toys to strengthen the protection of children's health.Interested parties can submit their views at Have Your Say.Aniline may bind to colorants in toy materials, such as textiles or leather, and has been suspected of causing cancer and inducing heritable mutations in human germ cells.The European Commission therefore proposes to amend the Toy Safety Directive to limit the amount of aniline in toys to 30 mg/kg, the minimum level that can be detected in a laboratory.

Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC sets out certain requirements for chemicals that may cause cancer, mutagenic or toxic according to THE EU CLP Regulation (EC) No 1272/2008.Annex C to Annex II of the Directive sets out specific limits for chemicals used in toys intended for use by children under 36 months of age or other toys to be placed in the mouth.According to THE CLP regulations of the European Union, aniline is classified as a class 2 carcinogen.
